Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has revealed the club’s prior interest in Jadon Sancho.
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has revealed to The Guardian that he did want to sign Jadon Sancho in 2017, but gave up hope of luring him from Manchester City.
Sancho, 18, has become a star at Borussia Dortmund, having traded a spot in City’s academy for a shot at first-team football in Germany almost two years ago.
The winger has dazzled this season with eight goals and 10 assists to his name, becoming a senior England international off the back of his displays.
Dortmund appear to have an absolute star on their hands, and they signed him for just £8million, as reported by The Guardian back in 2017.
Sancho would likely command at least 10 times that amount in the transfer market right now, and he will forever be linked with a return to English football.
Now, Liverpool boss Klopp has revealed that Liverpool ‘liked’ Sancho in 2017 and wanted to sign him, feeling that buying English players is ‘smart’.
However, Liverpool gave up hope when they felt City wouldn’t sell to them as a direct rival, with Klopp baffled at that approach whilst feeling Sancho is now in a ‘wonderful’ league.
“Buying English players is a smart idea because we would never have a chance to get Sancho,” said Klopp. “We are not blind – we saw him, we liked him and then we think: ‘Can we get him?’ No. Because English clubs don’t sell to other English clubs. I don’t know exactly what the reason is for that but they don’t do it. Now they can go to Germany, which is a wonderful league,” he added.
As City and Liverpool challenge for the Premier League title, having Sancho as a Red could have been a game-changing move, giving them a major advantage in the title race – and that is why they wouldn’t sell to the Reds, knowing full well that he could have caused them serious damage in the Premier League.
