Jurgen Klopp has appeared to accidentally confirm that Rhian Brewster is on his way out of Liverpool.
The 20-year-old hitman has been heavily linked with a move to Sheffield United among others in recent weeks.
Sky Sports News reported this morning that the Liverpool gem was set to join the Blades in a £23.5 million deal.
During a press conference this afternoon, via the club’s YouTube channel, Klopp was asked: “What was it about the timing or the deal that makes it right to sell him at this point?”
The Liverpool boss, without knowing that nothing had been announced, turned to his right and muttered, ‘Is it……?’ to the press officer, who offered a quick denial that anything was confirmed.
As the journalist bursted out laughing, Klopp added: “Very funny. I cannot respond to things from the newspaper or whatever. Nothing is announceable. Let me say it like this. Maybe the press conference is too early.”
It does certainly indicate that the German manager is expecting Brewster to leave imminently, going by the suggestion he thought it might’ve been confirmed already, followed by his claim that ‘nothing is announceable’.
If the Sky Sports report is true, Liverpool will have a buy-back clause that can be activated in any transfer window between now and 2023, which gives them a bit of reassurance.
That’s because a talent like Brewster could go very far in the Premier League, having scored 11 Championship during a half-season loan with Swansea last term.
And it’ll be fascinating to see how he fares in Yorkshire.
