Rangers are reportedly set to fork out up to £2.2million for Carlos Pena.

According to the Daily Mail, Rangers’ deal for Chivas Guadalajara midfielder Carlos Pena could reach £2.2million, making him the club’s most expensive signing since 2010.

The Gers have already tied up two summer signings by bringing Portuguese defender Bruno Alves and midfielder Ryan Jack to Ibrox from Cagliari and Aberdeen respectively.

However, manager Pedro Caixinha still needs to bring in more new signings after a third-placed finish in the Scottish Premiership this past season, and another new arrival appears to be on the way.

The Daily Mail report that Chivas Guadalajara midfielder Carlos Pena is set to join Rangers having been in Glasgow for talks and a medical on Friday afternoon – and the deal may well be a signal of intent from Rangers.

It’s claimed that Pena’s move will cost Rangers £2.2million in the end, which would make him the club’s most expensive signing in almost seven years.

In the summer of 2010, Rangers paid £4million to sign Croatian striker Nikica Jelavic from Rapid Vienna (BBC Sport), and this will be the first time that the Gers have paid more than £2million for a player since that deal.

The club’s liquidation and demotion of course had an impact on the fees being paid by Rangers, but this may also be a sign that chairman Dave King is not only ready to invest in new signings, but is also prepared to back manager Caixinha much more than he did with predecessor Mark Warburton.

Pena’s deal would make him more expensive than the likes of Lee Wallace and Joe Garner, bringing some level of expectation for the 27-year-old midfielder, who has 19 caps for Mexico – and Caixinha will be hoping that he lives up to expectations.
