Tottenham Hotspur legend Ledley King has claimed in his Seven of the Best column that his old side sorely missed Christian Eriksen during Sunday’s draw against Southampton.

The 25-year-old failed to recover from illness in time to feature for Mauricio Pochettino’s side against Southampton, as Spurs stuttered to a 1-1 draw against Mauricio Pellegrino’s side.

Spurs went behind to Davinson Sanchez’s own goal, as Dusan Tadic’s low cross was turned past Michel Vorm into the back of the net. Harry Kane scored his 29th goal of the season to equalise immediately, but Spurs failed to capitalise.

Former Spurs defender King reckons the absence of Denmark international Eriksen proved costly for Spurs, as Pochettino’s side missed the chance to move into the top four with Liverpool playing on Monday night.

“Eriksen was missed by Spurs on Sunday in a 1-1 draw with Southampton,” King said. “The Dane was sidelined due to illness and his presence was clearly missed.

“It’s his creativity and timing that often makes Spurs tick, and although Kane grabs most of the headlines with his sharpshooting, Eriksen is one of the key cogs in Pochettino’s system.”

Eriksen has been as creative as he has been prolific this season, scoring seven goals as well as adding eight assists for the north Londoners this season during his 28 league and cup appearances.

Pochettino is likely to rest the former Ajax star once again on Saturday as Spurs go up against League Two minnows Newport County in the fourth round of the FA Cup, but will be hoping he is fit to face Manchester United on January 31.
