Dave King says he would be surprised if former Rangers boss Walter Smith wanted a return to football.
Rangers chairman Dave King has told The Sun that he hasn’t considered a move to bring Walter Smith back to the club as manager.
King is currently in Glasgow as he gears up for a huge week at Ibrox, with Rangers seemingly set to appoint a new manager.
The 6-1 aggregate loss to Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership play-off final means that current boss Stuart McCall is fighting for his life as Rangers manager. The 50-year-old only arrived in March but was handed a deal until the end of the season – and having failed to win promotion to the top flight, McCall now faces being replaced this summer.
The Sun believe that Rangers have a six-man shortlist of candidates, featuring McCall, Derek McInnes, Billy Davies, Vitor Pereira, Mark Warburton and Ian Cathro as King ramps up his efforts to bring in a new manager ahead of next season.
However, one man who seemingly won’t be the next Rangers boss is Walter Smith. The 67-year-old has managed Rangers in two stints, becoming a club legend having won ten Scottish Premiership titles during his time in charge before retiring in 2011.
King was asked about the possibility of Smith returning to Ibrox as manager – but laughed off such a notion, saying he hasn’t even considered Smith as a candidate.
“I’d would be very, very surprised if Walter Smith wanted to come out of retirement,” said King. “It’s not been a consideration from my point of view,” he added.
