
Even though Karim Benzema is coming towards the latter years of his career, the Real Madrid star is ageing like a fine wine on the football field, as Liverpool fans can testify.
Liverpool supporters would have been tuning in to Saturday’s El Clásico last night, well, because it’s Real Madrid v Barcelona.
But a lot more of the Anfield faithful would have had an eagle eye on that titanic showdown in Southern Europe because of their Champions League showdown on Wednesday.
And in preparation for that almighty second leg scrap, Madrid’s quick-thinking Frenchman scored a deft back-heel inside 13 minutes to open the scoring before Toni Kross doubled his side’s lead.
Zinedine Zidane’s side would hold onto a 2-1 lead as the rain pelted down on the Alfredo Di Stefano stadium and now a trip to Merseyside awaits those in Madrid colours.
It seems as though a player of Benzema’s stature and quality – purchased for £30 million in 2009 (Guardian) – only gets appreciated when he works his magic in big games, just like he did against Barcalona.
But Liverpool fans will be hoping they don’t see any of his tricks in a few days time because they felt that he was impressive against Barca.
