Tottenham Hotspur defender Kieran Trippier has told the club’s official website that he asked Christian Eriksen if he could take his free kick goal against Fulham because he felt particularly confident.

Spurs went into the game against their London neighbours having beaten Newcastle United 2-1 on the opening weekend of the season, and were looking for a similarly successful afternoon.

Lucas Moura opened the scoring to set Spurs on their way, but Aleksandar Mitrovic’s equaliser threatened to leave Spurs to rue missed chances at Wembley Stadium.

However, Kieran Trippier’s free kick put Spurs back in front, and Harry Kane struck his first ever league goal in August to give Tottenham a 3-1 victory.

Aside from Kane shaking his hoodoo, one of the highlights of the game was Trippier’s free kick, as the ‘Bury Beckham’ lived up to the nickname he earned for England at the World Cup.

The right back was deadly crossing the ball for England in Russia, and even scored a superb free kick in the semi final against Croatia to earn his tag, and he bagged another free kick against Fulham.

It was something of a surprise to see Trippier taking a direct free kick for Spurs given that Christian Eriksen is the usual dead-ball specialist for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, but Trippier managed to get the nod, and took his chance.

Now, Trippier has told the club’s official website that he actually had to ask Eriksen for permission to take the free kick beforehand, and lodged his pitch by telling the Dane that he felt particularly confident from the range.

“Myself and Christian were practising all week, but it’s just about who feels confident at that moment in time in the game,” said Trippier. “I spoke with Christian and I just said ‘I feel confident, can I take this one?’ and Christian said ‘yeah, no problem’, and I’m happy to tuck it away.”

“People could say it’s a one-off thing (the free-kick in the World Cup) but I just practise and practise after training every day when I was away with England and at Tottenham. I’m absolutely delighted that I managed to score my free-kick and hopefully there’s many more this season. The most important thing was that we got the result today, six points out of two games and we move on now,” he added.
