Atletico Madrid defender Kieran Trippier has told the Daily Mail that it’s ‘disappointing’ to have been shown the door by Tottenham Hotspur this summer.

Spurs chose to sell Trippier back in July, agreeing a £20million deal with Atletico Madrid, with the fee reported by The Guardian.

Trippier, 28, had spent four years with Spurs, having been a bargain £3.5million signing from Burnley back in the summer of 2015 (Telegraph).

Whilst initially brought in as cover for Kyle Walker, Trippier ended up taking over in 2017, and then replacing Walker upon his move to Manchester City – but his last couple of seasons have been mixed.

In terms of delivery from the flans, Trippier was great. He could create chances against any opponent, and Harry Kane certainly thrived from his service.

Defensively, Trippier wasn’t great. His form was also a concern, as whilst he excelled at the 2018 World Cup with England, he regressed badly last season and was often criticised by Spurs fans.

His move was mostly seen as the right decision, but Spurs suddenly not having a clear first-choice right back suddenly looks like a concern in light of Trippier’s exit.

Trippier has now admitted that he heard all the rumours about his exit, and when he tried to speak to Mauricio Pochettino and Daniel Levy about the situation, he didn’t really get an answer either way.

That was enough for Trippier to get the message that he would be leaving, and whilst he doesn’t have any bad blood with Pochettino, it’s clear that the manner of his exit is a source of frustration for the right back.

“I heard rumours about them selling me and it’s not nice but it happens and it’s football,” said Trippier. “[When I spoke to Mauricio Pochettino] He didn’t say he wanted to move me on. I tried to speak to the chairman about it. I spoke to the manager about his plans and I didn’t get a yes and I didn’t get a no. So you get the impression.”

“It’s disappointing. I gave everything for the club and I wanted to stay, I had another couple of years left, but everything happens for a reason. Me and the manager didn’t leave on bad terms, he has done a lot for me and I respect him highly. It is just a few things, I tried to speak to the chairman I just didn’t really get an answer,” he added.
