Kieran Trippier has been keen to praise one ‘relentless’ Newcastle United player who could be set for an important tournament in Germany this summer.
Last season, Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United struggled to match their superb campaign of 2022/2023 where they finished fourth place in the Premier League.
With Champions League football last season, the Geordie side struggled and were stretched very thin with an unprecedented amount of injury problems for Howe to have to deal with.
One player, however, who excelled last season was former Everton winger Anthony Gordon, who had an outstanding campaign for the club and has earned an England call-up.
Trippier praise
Speaking to talkSPORT, England defender Kieran Trippier, who could well line-up at left-back for the Three Lions, was keen to praise the relentlessness of the winger.
“I am really happy for Anthony because when he first arrived at Newcastle, I think he won’t mind me saying that, he struggled a little bit in the sense of fitness-wise and stuff like that,” Trippier said.
“But I had a good chat with him. We were on holiday together before he went and won the Euros with the Under-21s. Since then he has taken off and he fully deserves to be here. I think he has certainly earned the right to be here. He has trained really well. Really happy for him.”
When asked what the chat between the pair was, Trippier added: “We had a nice chat. We were on holiday together with our families. I was just saying, just maybe trying a bit too hard when he first arrived.
“But I said to him as soon, ’As you finish with the Under-21s, don’t take a holiday, come straight back into pre-season first day, hit the ground running’. And he certainly has. You can see how fit he is. Off the ball, what people might not see he’s relentless. He has done incredibly well, and I couldn’t be happier for him.”
Gordon’s impact
Since moving to Everton back in January of 2023, it had been a mixed start for the winger but the season just gone was much better.
Last season in the Premier League, Gordon scored 11 times for the club and assisted a further 10 more in what was an outstanding individual season.
With no Marcus Rashford this summer, due to being left out of the squad by Gareth Southgate, Gordon could be that electric outlet that the Three Lions may need.
