Tottenham Hotspur were really impressive during the group stage of the Champions League this season.

Tottenham ace Kieran Trippier sat down for an exclusive interview with the club’s official website and shared how his side’s performances against Real Madrid in the Champions League this season were a real statement to the rest of Europe.

Spurs actually enjoyed a decent campaign on the whole, despite their failure to win a trophy once again, and they ended up finishing in third position in the Premier League table.

Kieran Trippier of Spurs goes off injued during the pre-season match between Tottenham Hotspur and Juventus at Wembley Stadium on August 5, 2017 in London, England.

It could be argued that they were unfortunate to get knocked out of the Champions League by Juventus, after the Italians produced a smash and grab win during the second leg of their last 16 tie at Wembley.

Trippier highlighted his side’s performances in Europe this term as something that would have made a huge statement to the rest of Europe, when speaking exclusively to the club’s official website:

(L-R) Kieran Trippier chats with teamate Raheem Sterling during the England training session at the Chemin De Ronde Stadium on June 12, 2017 in Croissy-sur-Seine, France.

“The Arsenal game was a nice victory in February (1-0 win) so that would be my pick in the Premier League but as for the season as a whole, Real Madrid at home. That was a statement win. Everyone wrote us off in the group stage before we started but we finished top. Everything about that night… that made a statement around Europe.”

Despite Spurs’ impressive showings on the continent, they must learn from the manner in which they were dumped out of Europe’s premier competition, and evolve as a team both mentally and physically.

That will be easier said than done, of course, but with Mauricio Pochettino having recently committed the next five years of his career to Tottenahm, there is no reason why they cannot go one step further in Europe next season.
