Newcastle United have announced the arrival of Chris Wood as the club’s second signing of the January window – and the club’s new ownership. Both Kieran Trippier, and Jose Enrique, have reacted to the signing on Instagram.

Wood, 30, joins the club in what is a much-needed signing. The Toon desperately wanted to bring in a striker before Saturday’s relegation six-pointer against Watford – and they have done so by raiding Burnley.

The New Zealand international is expected to cost in the region of £25million, with Burnley said to be frustrated at the club’s decision to cash in. It not only strengthens Newcastle, but weakens a relegation rival.

With Callum Wilson injured, Wood is expected to make his debut for the Toon on Saturday – as Newcastle look to pick up just a second league win under Eddie Howe. Jose Enrique gave his take, as did Trippier.

Trippier and Enrique react as Wood joins: Ideal signing for Newcastle

Just what Newcastle need. They could have brought in Hugo Ekitike – they still might – or another unproven Premier League striker. Hanging their hat on Ekitike while Callum Wilson is injured would be wrong.

Newcastle need players to hit the ground running and both Trippier and Wood are perfect examples of that. They know the Premier League, they know what it is like to fight against the drop. Wood is the ideal signing.

If the ex-Leeds and Leicester star can score between five and 10 goals in the Premier League between now and the end of the season – then it is money well spent.
