Tottenham Hotspur defender Kieran Trippier has admitted to ESPN that he made a huge mistake against Manchester United recently.

Trippier has impressed with his recent performances in a Spurs shirt, but he did make a rare error in Mauricio Pochettino’s side’s final match at White Hart Lane.

With Spurs leading 2-0, United were pushing men forward and Trippier was guilty of handing the Red Devils a route back into the match.

The former Burnley man lunged into a tackle on Anthony Martial, which the United attacker easily rounded, before squaring the ball to Wayne Rooney to tap in.

Although Spurs still went on to win the match 2-1, the finish was nervier than it should have been.

And Trippier admits that he still hasn’t entirely forgotten about the error he made.

“When that goal went in [against United], as soon as Martial took the ball past me I knew I’d made a stupid, stupid error. You know straight away,” Trippier said.

“I’m able to move on from mistakes very quickly but as soon as the action happened I knew instantly that I’d made a huge mistake. With his pace, he was through on goal and I take that responsibility.

“I said to the lads after the United game ‘that was my fault.’ They’re top lads and said ‘no, after that happened, we could have stopped the goal going in.’ But I take that on my shoulders, it’s no problem, and it went before the next game.”

Trippier appears to have become Spurs’ first choice right-back, and could have an important role to play next season.

Tottenham are expected to sell Kyle Walker in the summer, which means Trippier could be a regular starter for the North London club next term.
