Kieran Tierney is a left-back by trade, but on Thursday evening, the Celtic star featured as a central defender for Scotland against the Netherlands.

The 20-year-old played well as a centre-back, as Scotland lost the friendly international at the Pittodrie Stadium 1-0.

After the match, the youngster said that he does not mind playing wherever his manager wants him to, something that Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers should take note of.

“It’s an odd position for me,” Tierney told Sky Sports Football on Thursday evening (9:45pm, November 9, 2017) after the live coverage of the match between Scotland and the Netherlands about playing at centre-back.

“I played there a couple of times. It’s just getting used to wherever the manager wants me to play. I don’t mind.”

Tierney is one of the best young left-backs in Europe, and his performances as a central defender have been encouraging.

The youngster has played in that position for Celtic and for Scotland now this season, and he seems to be getting better at it.

Could this mean that Celtic could save money on a central defender in the January transfer window, an area that clearly needs addressing?

Probably, especially if the Scottish youngster continues to progress as expected and does not mind being deployed out of position.

Celtic are not going to get too many good centre-backs in January, or they would have to pay a lot of money to prise one away from his club.

It would make sense if Tierney covers at centre-back from time to time until the end of the season, when the Glasgow giants could sign a ‘proper’ centre-back.
