Kieran Tierney has told Football Daily that he is “genuinely so happy” to see Arsenal defender William Saliba in “amazing” form in a Gunners shirt – claiming the Frenchman is “one of the nicest people” he has ever met.

Saliba, 21, returned to Arsenal in the summer after a wonderful loan spell with Marseille. He clocked up 52 outings for the Ligue 1 side under Jorge Sampaoli, who has since been replaced. It saw him become a France international.

It was Saliba’s third loan away from Arsenal since joining the club from St. Etienne in 2019. He has also returned to Les Verts, and gone on loan to OGC Nice. But it was his time at Marseille that finally convinced Mikel Arteta.

Discussing the centre-back and his form since the beginning of the season, Tierney raved about Saliba. The Scottish defender said he is “so happy” to see Saliba thriving at The Emirates – saying he is an “amazing” player.

“Saliba has done amazing. I am genuinely so happy because he is one of the nicest people I have ever met. He probably found it tough when he came here, he was so young. He had to go on loan a few times,” Tierney said.

“It just shows the character he has got, that he can just come back and fit right in like he has been here for the last two or three years. So all credit to him. He’s an amazing player, amazing guy. He deserves every bit of credit.”

Saliba has been like a new signing. A common phrase, but it cannot be better coined at a player this season. Coming into the side for the first time since joining under Unai Emery in 2019, he has been simply fantastic.

He has started and finished every Premier League game so far, so much so that Ben White has been pushed to the right side of the defence. Indeed, he has outperformed Gabriel at centre-back this season and will start on Sunday.
