As some of the nation braved the early hours kick-off time, and some found out the score when they woke up, the prime minister, Keir Starmer, shared his reaction to the result.
The outgoing PM was also joined by his expected successor, Andy Burnham, in congratulating the Three Lions after what was a stunning performance.

As the battle for Number 10, Downing Street begins to heat up, the pair can at least agree on just how well Tuchel’s team played at the Azteca.

The 56-year-old is a big-time Everton supporter and will have been absolutely delighted to see Pickford perform to the level he did against Mexico.
It will certainly be a tough test for the England number one on Saturday when he faces the in-form Norway striker.
