Former Swansea City midfielder Ki Sung-yueng has shared his thoughts on why the Welsh club was relegated from the Premier League last term.

The Swans saw their seven-year tenure in the top flight come to an end in May, as they finished their campaign 18th in the table with just 33 points from 38 games.

Ki’s 2017/18 campaign was impacted by injury, the South Korea international missing the first seven league games of the season with a knee problem and a further five around the festive period due to a calf strain.

Although the 29-year-old weighed in with two goals and two assists, he could not prevent Swansea’s form from slumping at the business end of the campaign, with the 1-0 loss to Southampton all but confirming their relegation.

Now at Newcastle United, Ki is once again embroiled in a survival battle and, speaking to Chronicle Live, he claimed that the Magpies are better equipped to beat the drop than the Swans.

“It is never nice being down at the bottom, as we found at Swansea last season,” Ki told reporters.

“It is always difficult and it was a bad year at Swansea last year for that, but I believe this squad has enough to stay in the Premier League, for sure.

“Because we won against Watford we will go into the next one against Bournemouth with our confidence much higher. And, if we win again, then I think we will be fine.

“It is all about momentum at the bottom, and we struggled for that at Swansea. I think it can be different here.”

Swansea currently sit ninth in the Championship table on 23 points, with two wins and three defeats from their last five league games.
