Newcastle United ran out 1-0 winners over Watford, with Rafael Benitez’s side picking up their first win of the season.

Newcastle's new free signing Sung-Yeung Ki in action during a pre-season friendly match between Hull City and Newcastle United at KCOM Stadium on July 24, 2018 in Hull, England.

Ki Sung-Yeung has revealed to the Shields Gazette that Rafael Benitez wanted him to control the game for Newcastle United against Watford.

Ki was brought on as a substitute during Newcastle’s latest match against Watford, as Benitez looked to shore up his midfield options.

The South Korean was called upon after Jonjo Shelvey picked up an injury, and he entered the field with the scoreline deadlocked at 0-0.

With Newcastle needing a hero, Ki stepped up to the plate and set-up the winning goal.

The summer signing drilled in a free-kick which was flicked into the back of the net by Ayoze Perez.

And Ki said: “I’m just so pleased I can help the team at a really important time. Hopefully, this result is the boost we all needed, not just to move up the table, but to give everyone belief. It’s not good being at the bottom of the table.

“The manager just said to me try and control the game.

“In football, circumstances can change so quickly. Someone gets injured, and you get that chance you’ve been waiting for.”

Newcastle’s win over Watford helped them move out of the relegation zone, and lifted some of the pessimism around St. James’ Park.

Although Benitez’s side are still under pressure to build on this result, they have at least got their first win of the season now.

Newcastle are next in action on Saturday when they take on Bournemouth.
