Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Ki-Jana Hoever has admitted that things went too slowly for him at Anfield, hence his decision to leave.
Hoever was born in Amsterdam but chose to leave the Ajax ranks for Liverpool back in 2018.
Within six months, Hoever was coming on for an injured Dejan Lovren in an FA Cup tie at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Liverpool handed Hoever a professional deal in 2019, and he scored his first goal for the club against Milton Keynes Dons just two months later.
To be starting for Liverpool at 17, even if only in a cup game, was major progress for Hoever.
The Dutchman only managed four first-team appearances for Liverpool before deciding to leave in 2020.
Hoever joined Wolves, heading there permanently as Diogo Jota secured a move from Molineux to Liverpool.
Now featuring in Wolves’ first team, Hoever is rated highly under Bruno Lage and is competing at both right wing back and centre back.
Lage has even called Hoever a ‘top young talent’ having been impressed with his progress.
Hoever has now told Voetbal International that it was amazing to be playing for Liverpool so quickly.
However, the lack of progress was ‘difficult’ for the defender, and he decided to chase more action at Wolves.
“I didn’t expect anything like that when I just signed with the club, by any means,” said Hoever. “That I would make my debut within six months, while before that, I played my matches in the Under-17s at Ajax. That all happened very quickly. That is also difficult because, after that, it doesn’t go so fast,” he added.
