Khamzat Chimaev has given his perspective on the altercation with Ian Machado Garry.
Chimaev was at UFC Qatar, working in Arman Tsarukyan’s corner during his submission victory over Dan Hooker.
Earlier in this same event, Machado Garry picked up a decision win over Belal Muhammad to strengthen his case for a shot at the welterweight title.
Following the bout, ‘Borz’ and ‘The Future’ were involved in a heated, physical confrontation backstage.
Khamzat Chimaev explains what led to backstage incident with Ian Machado Garry

Footage from backstage showed Machado Garry congratulating Arman Tsarukyan after his win at UFC Qatar.
During the exchange, the Irish fighter put his hand on Chimaev’s neck while speaking to the team, which did not seem to sit well with the 31-year-old.
Chimaev responded by patting Machado Garry hard on the back, and a security guard quickly stepped in. Shortly after, ‘Borz’ shoved the welterweight contender.
The 185lb champion later stated that he pushed Machado Garry because he perceived the contact as disrespectful.
Chimaev said: “Don’t punch somebody from behind.
“Yeah, he’s like slapping my back.
“If you wanna show respect, respectfully touch somebody.
“He came there to make some hype. You know that guy is trying to be Conor, but he’s never gonna be Conor [McGregor]. He’s a s— fighter.”
Khamzat Chimaev’s next fight
Chimaev has not stepped into the Octagon since he claimed the middleweight belt at UFC 319 back in August.
The 31-year-old put in a dominant performance over five rounds against Dricus du Plessis, winning by unanimous decision.
There had been hope that Chimaev would make his first title defence before the end of 2025.
However, an upcoming foot surgery will delay his return until April 2026.
“My return – after Ramadan,” he stated.
“Right now, I have a small operation on my foot.
“I’ll step away from training for a couple of weeks, heal my wound. So we’ll prepare after Ramadan.
“Whoever they give me, that’s who I’ll face.”
