Wagner is forced to make three changes to his starting XI but should he prove his side has strength in depth, the Terriers will be contenders this season.

With van La Parra’s red card on Saturday in their 1-0 defeat to Reading, Huddersfield Town now have three players facing one match bans and one player out with injury.

But the squad are boasting a positive outlook as there’s plenty to look forward to when they host Rotherham at the John Smith stadium.

Rajiv van La Parra, skipper Mark Hudson and Chris Lowe have all received bans for dissent and winger Joe Lolley is recovering from a foot injury, meaning David Wagner will have to prove his side has strength in depth if they are to bounce back from their 10-man loss at the Madjeski Stadium, a challenge he is looking forward to.

At his press conference on Monday, reported by the club website, Wagner said: “To be honest I’m excited about it because the players worked very hard in training and they delivered so I totally trust the players that will replace tomorrow.

“We have the chance at this game with the home crowd in the back to come to 22 points from 10 games, a great story and we have to focus on this.”

One of the players who will be getting his first start for the squad is defender Michael Hefele who made a name for himself when he scored seconds after coming on in his debut against Aston Villa to salvage a point for Town.

Tareiq Holmes-Dennis will also make his debut for the club.

The test couldn’t come at a better time as the Terriers will face a struggling Rotherham side who have yet to win on the road.

The Millers are second from bottom, having only taken six points from nine games and Town forward Nahki Wells thinks a Yorkshire derby is just what his side need to bounce back from Reading.

Speaking to HTTV, he said: “The gaffer has emphasised we always look forward. We have the benefit of having a fixture two days later after a disappointing result.

“It’s a Yorkshire derby so I know there’s a lot of pride at stake and we want the three points.”

If Huddersfield beat Rotherham, it won’t just be pride they win but they will also reclaim the top spot in the league as current leaders Norwich don’t play until Wednesday when they face a tough test with Newcastle United.
