Fenerbahce president Ali Koc has admitted that it’s the club’s ‘dream’ to sign Arsenal player Mesut Ozil, as broadcast by Good Morning Transfers on Sky Sports on Tuesday.
Ozil’s career lies elsewhere after the Arsenal playmaker was left out of Mikel Arteta’s 25-man Premier League squad at the start of the season.
But the million dollar question remains is whether he stays put in North London and has more Twitter Q/A’s than minutes on the pitch, or he signs on the dotted line for another club and starts playing again.
Given Ozil’s Turkish background, it’s understandable where those Fenerbahce rumours come from, as their president shared that a potential transfer is ‘closer’ than before.
“Let me make a statement about Mesut Ozil,” said Koc. “I am still saying it’s a dream. If you are aware, we as the Fenerbache Sports Club never made a single statement about this.
“What’s important here is that Mesut Ozil can address the issues with his present club. We can say this (Ozil’s transfer) is a subject that we are closer to in comparison to the past.
“There isn’t a single thing this is finished, it may end or it may not end. Therefore, these types of stories being published in the press make our hand weaker.
“We will see what the days ahead will show us.”
It’s pretty clear by Koc’s comments that the issue is wages and the likely scenario that Fenerbahce cannot pay them.
More than likely, he will end up playing in Turkey down the line, but it wouldn’t be a surprise if it happens when he becomes a free transfer rather at this current point.
But until then, Ozil will be providing entertainment with his Q/A’s rather than with the ball at his feet.
