The Tottenham Hotspur defender did not let the disappoint of an early yellow card and an own goal get him down.

Tottenham Hotspur Kevin Wimmer has had a strange season to date, continually overlooked despite impressing in the previous campaign and featuring just twice in the EFL Cup prior to the weekend action.

On Sunday the Austria international received a surprise call-up in a new-look Tottenham formation, but unfortunately for Wimmer he was booked after just six minutes and put through his own net shortly before the interval to give Arsenal the lead (despite the validity of the strike in question).

It would be easy to dismiss this as a failed audition, but that would be incorrect, because despite Wimmer not getting everything right against the Gunners, he recovered from his early setbacks to get very little wrong in the second half.

In fact, it was a mark of the man that he put in a superb overall performance against Tottenham’s fierce rivals, never letting his head drop and instead seizing the opportunity.

Wimmer showed last season that he has what it takes to succeed in the Premier League. However there was a fear that he was not the same player when he was not alongside the imperious Toby Alderweireld.

The Belgian international will put anyone at ease but Wimmer showed on Sunday that even when the chips are down and luck does not appear to be on his side, he gets stuck in and defends like the best of them.

That is why he is a fan favourite among Tottenham fans and why more chances will come his way despite a slow start to the current campaign.
