It would be hard to blame him for leaving Tottenham Hotspur this winter.

January is a time for fresh starts, and Kevin Wimmer should be among those in search of a new beginning when the transfer window is back open for business.

Saturday at Stamford Bridge was a new low for the centre-back – making only his second Premier League appearance of the season; his first resulting in an own goal away at Arsenal earlier this month – as Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino deployed him at left-back in a decision which proved costly – very costly.

The 24-year-old was nowhere to be seen on 52 minutes when Victor Moses wandered into the acre of space on Spurs’ left-hand side and tapped home what proved to be the winning goal.

It would be easy to point the finger at Wimmer, but Tottenham fans can’t blame him – and nor can they really blame him if he decides to quit in January.

Pochettino was wrong to put him in that position – in both senses of the word – and it remains to be seen why, or how, he has fallen so far.

Tottenham's Kevin Wimmer reacts

It’s easy to forget now, but the Austrian proved himself a very fine centre-back last term in Jan Vertonghen’s absence and someone of that promise does not need the indignity of battling with rookie Cameron Carter-Vickers to be Spurs’ fourth-choice centre-back, with Eric Dier seemingly first reserve these days.

If last season is anything to go by then he could be an automatic starter for a number of Premier League sides. He won’t be short of suitors and whether it’s in England or not, Wimmer should leave.

It is becoming increasingly apparent that he will not succeed at Tottenham under Pochettino.
