Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Wimmer has suggested to The Sun that he could leave the club in the January transfer window.

Wimmer joined Tottenham from German club FC Koln in the summer of 2015 and has a contract with the North London outfit until June 2021, according to Transfermarkt.co.uk.

According to a report in The Daily Mail at the time, Spurs had to pay Koln a transfer fee of £4.3 million in order to secure the services of the defender.

The 23-year-old arrived at White Hart Lane with a strong reputation, but the centre-back has struggled for playing time.

The Austria international was able to make just 10 appearances in the Premier League for Tottenham last season.

So far this campaign, Wimmer has yet to feature for Mauricio Pochettino’s side in the league.

The defender has admitted his frustration at lack of competitive action for Tottenham, and has suggested that he could leave in the January transfer window.

“The manager often opts against having a centre-back among his substitutes,” Wimmer told The Sun. “My situation is difficult at present. I will be patient and wait for my chance.

“But it is not easy to train week in and week out, only to sit on the bench or even in the stand during games.

“Last season was my first with a big Premier League club. I knew it would be tough, but still played 21 times as we fought for the title, and now I want more games.

“I will see what the next few weeks bring in terms of appearances. We have a lot of midweek games, and I will remain positive.

“But I will take another look at my situation in January, and decide whether or not to look round at other clubs.”

Wimmer is a good defender, but the problem is that at Tottenham there are better centre-backs.

Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld have formed a formidable partnership in central defence for Spurs, and it is hard to see anyone breaking that anytime soon.
