The Austrian insists the club are still big fans of his talent.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Wimmer has admitted his disappointment at a lack of first-team action for the club this season, but insists the club are happy with him.

The Austrian defender was handed a new contract last season after he impressed in the place of the injured Jan Vertonghen toward the end of the campaign.

But despite that good form at the end of last season Wimmer has fallen down the pecking order at Tottenham Hotspur.

Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld remain the number one choices, with Eric Dier slipping in if needed. Young American talent Cameron Carter-Vickers also appears to have usurped him in the race for starting places at centre-back for Spurs.

Wimmer, speaking to Kleine Zeitung, admits he is finding tough at Spurs but that the club insist he is a player they want to keep long-term:

“After last season, where I played towards the end quite frequently already, I’m already down on other expectations for the season.

“That has taken me back a bit. It is difficult at the moment but I am patiently waiting for my chance. I try to always stay positive.

“The feedback from the club is always that they are very happy, that they see the future with me. This is very positive, but it is one of the here and now.”

He was then asked about a potential exit in January. Wimmer remained non-committal, but suggested he hoped to play in the Champions League and over the busy midweek periods:

“We will see what (happens) in the second half of the season, how much I start. We have a few midweek matches.”

There is no doubt that the Austrian has the talent to make it at Spurs, but it seems that there are players in his position who have even more.

Perhaps a loan move for Wimmer in January would not be the worst idea.
