Kevin Wimmer told Football London that Jan Vertonghen was the ‘perfect’ defender for Tottenham.

The Austria international would have trained alongside Vertonghen on a weekly basis during his days at the club and he feels that the Belgian was ‘underestimated’ by the Tottenham fans.

Vertonghen left Tottenham last summer after the club opted against renewing the 33-year-old’s contract.

Wimmer was behind both Vertonghen and his partner in crime, Toby Alderweireld, during his days in North London, as he was full of praise for the now Benfica player.

“For me, it’s clear Jan Vertonghen is maybe sometimes a bit underestimated,” said Wimmer. “But, for me, he’s like the perfect centre-back.

“For me, it was clear he has more class than me and if he’s fit he will go straight into the team and that’s what happened.”

It was pretty clear that Vertonghen’s time at Tottenham was coming to an end and it was right for him to move on.

But one thing is for sure, he was a popular figure with the supporters and many loved the ice-cool nature of his game.

Tottenham fans would love to wind back the clocks and have a thriving Alderweireld and Vertonghen at the back because they need it a lot now.
