Steven Gerrard’s Rangers side will be looking to beat Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic to the league title this season.

Ex-Rangers player Kevin Thomson spoke exclusively to the Daily Record about his former side’s hopes of challenging for the Scottish Premiership title this season, highlighting the importance of Steven Gerrard’s men hanging on to Celtic’s coat-tails by the time that Christmas rolls around.

Rangers currently sit in seventh spot in the table, having taken five points from their opening four league outings, and they sit four points adrift of their bitter rivals Celtic.

Gerrard’s men have only lost one game all season in all competitions, though, and there is real reason for the optimism that is currently reverberating around Ibrox.

Thomson, whose career was cut short because of injuries, highlighted how Rangers must be close to Celtic heading into the Christmad period, if they are to have any chance of winning the league this season, as quoted by the Daily Record:

Steven Gerrard, Manager of Rangers looks on during the Scottish Premier League match between Celtic and Rangers at Celtic Park Stadium on September 2, 2018 in Glasgow, Scotland.

“The manager will know that, come Christmas time, they need to be there or thereabouts if they’re going to give themselves an opportunity to be successful this year. Celtic undoubtedly deserve a lot of credit for the success they’ve had over a number of seasons now but I’d say, as a fan of Scottish football, this is the first season they’ll have been tested. I may be wrong – they might win the league by 20 points but this will be the first time in a while they’ll come under pressure in domestic competitions having obviously had it their own way for a period of time. Hopefully that bodes well for Gerrard.”

Next up for Rangers is a home game against Dundee on Saturday, and Gerrard’s men will be desperate for all three points, as they look to get their season back on track.
