Kevin Thomson lauds Jason Holt’s appearance in Rangers’ 4-1 win

Glasgow Rangers bounced back from last weekend’s Old Firm defeat at Ibrox, by beating Hamilton 4-1 on Friday night.

Kevin Thomson told BT Sport’s live post-match coverage of Rangers’ trip to Hamilton (broadcast 29th September 2017 from 19:00) that he was extremely impressed by Jason Holt’s substitute performance in the 4-1 win.

Pedro Caixinha’s men bounced back from defeat in the first Old Firm game of the season in emphatic fashion. But it had initially appeared that Accies may be about to inflict more misery on the Gers as they took the lead inside the first minute.

However, a brace from Declan John, an excellent finish from Daniel Candeias and an outrageously calm penalty from Graham Dorrans turned the game around completely inside the hour.

The penalty had been won by Holt who had been brought on for Carlos Pena early on in the second-half – for his first Scottish Premiership appearance of the season – shortly after Ryan Jack had been dismissed for the Light Blues.

While Hamilton rallied late on, the 24-year-old’s display appeared to be a key reason why Rangers’ numerical disadvantage did not have an impact on the scoreline as the game remained 4-1. And after the contest, Thomson suggested that Holt’s attitude and performance was extremely impressive.

“I thought Jason Holt came on and did really well. His energy, his driving runs, especially when you’re down to 10 men, that’s when you need legs in the middle of the pitch,” he told BT Sport’s live post-match coverage of Hamilton vs Rangers.

“The fact that he’s obviously been in the wilderness as such, he’s struggled to find his place in the team. I thought he was terrific when he came on tonight.

“I think it shows his character, it shows his willingness to try and do better. To be in a position as a young player to find himself out of the team, in the wilderness, to then fight his way back in and show the commitment that he does. I think it’s terrific.”

With Jack now suspended and Pena perhaps lucky not to be sent off while he was on the pitch, Holt has surely done his chances of coming back into Caixinha’s main plans no harm at all with a combative, energetic display.
