Kevin Thomson has told STV that he believes Kyle Lafferty will be a good signing for Rangers, but only if the target man can produce his best form on a consistent basis at Ibrox.

The 30-year-old moved to Ibrox towards the end of the transfer window as Steven Gerrard brought 15 new players to Rangers this summer, the latest being veteran defender and Lafferty’s Northern Ireland teammate Gareth McAuley.

Lafferty, who spent four years at Rangers between 2008 and 2012 and scored 36 goals, has since managed two goals in four appearances under Gerrard and is pushing Alfredo Morelos for his starting spot in the side.

Thomson, who is currently working at Rangers as a youth coach, expects Lafferty to impress back in a Light Blue shirt but did state that the former Norwich City, Birmingham City and Palermo striker must be “firing on all cylinders.”

“As for Lafferty, he’s a good friend of mine, he’s a good lad,” Thomson said.

“He’ll add goals, he had a good season at Hearts last season albeit in a pretty ordinary team. If he can come here and fire on all cylinders it ill be good for the team.”

Lafferty won three Scottish Premiership medals with Rangers during his previous spell with the Glasgow club, where he was used as a winger just as much as a centre-forward.

There are doubts about the star’s fitness, though, after he missed training with Northern Ireland on Monday as a precaution before remaining an unused substitute in Tuesday night’s 3-0 friendly win over Israel at Windsor Park.

It remains to be seen if he will be fit for Saturday’s Scottish Premiership clash against Dundee at Ibrox, before Rangers start their Europa League group stage campaign against Villarreal on Thursday.
