Alves has left Rangers to join Serie A side Parma.
Rangers coach Kevin Thomson has told BT Sport that he was “disappointed” with Bruno Alves during the 2017-18 season, who has since left to join Serie A side Parma.
Alves, 36, has joined Parma on a one-year contract after agreeing to tear up his contract following the end of the World Cup in Russia where he remained on the bench, as Portugal reached the last 16.
Signed by Pedro Caixinha, the Euro 2016 champion made 25 appearances for the Gers but failed to hold down a place in the Rangers side – especially during Graeme Murty’s spell in charge.
Thomson gave a brutally honest verdict on the centre-back, who has made way for the likes of Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic while Steven Gerrard remains interested in bringing another central defender to the club.
“When they brought in Alves, I came out in the paper saying the spine of the team needed to be fixed,” Thomson said. “I thought Alves potentially could have been the one that could have done that.
“He was disappointing, to be honest, whenever I had seen him. That’s taking nothing away from the career that he’s had. For whatever reason, it didn’t work out.”
Alves is just one of a number of expensive, foreign imports under Caixinha to have failed at Rangers, including the likes of Carlos Pena, Eduardo Herrera and Fabio Cardoso.
Rangers earned their first win under Steven Gerrard competitively, as they saw off the challenge of Macedonian outfit FK Shkupi with a 2-0 win at Ibrox thanks to goals from Jamie Murphy and James Tavernier.
