Rangers icon Kevin Thomson has told Sky Sports that Ange Postecoglou was a “laughing stock” when he first joined Celtic – but has applauded the Celtic boss for the way he has carried himself, branding him a “breath of fresh air”.

Postecoglou, 57, has been sensational since he arrived at Celtic. He took over a side looking somewhat beleaguered after Rangers won the 2020-21 campaign unbeaten. A side lacking in players both in terms of quantity, and quality.

But he has recruited well, installed a completely new way of playing – and it worked. Instantly, winning the Premiership. This season, Celtic gave much more in the Champions League than Rangers and sit nine points clear at the top.

Thomson was asked about Postecoglou and gave his verdict on the Aussie’s 18 months in charge. He says it is “mad to think” how much he was vilified since he moved to Celtic – praising his recruitment and the way he conducts himself.

“It’s mad to think that Ange was a laughing stock when he first came to Scotland,” Thomson said. “He was getting battered from pillar to post. But as an individual, he has always carried himself with real class. It is refreshing.

“Sometimes outside voices and the media can be difficult when you come under scrutiny. But the way he has conducted himself has been a breath of fresh air. He’s recruitment has been spot on. Domestically, so far so good.”

Thomson: Celtic boss Postecoglou a breath of fresh air

Thomson is right to say when Postecoglou first joined Celtic as manager, he was the target of a few laughs from Rangers fans. Whether it be his unknown reputation, or his coaching badges, Rangers fans were not concerned.

But since then, he has become a leader at Celtic. An icon, his work on the training ground, in the transfer market and the style he has inserted at Parkhead has taken the Hoops far above Rangers. He deserves praise, and more praise.

Can Michael Beale take his Rangers side up to Celtic’s level? Of course he can, but he requires the backing of the board and needs to work his magic on the training ground. If that is enough to close the nine-point gap, is another question.
