Wolverhampton Wanderers are hoping to see Ryan Giles develop into a star.

Wolverhampton Wanderers sporting director Kevin Thelwell has told The Express and Star that he thinks Ryan Giles has ‘high potential’.

Wolves have picked up one point form their first two Premier League games, drawing 2-2 at home with Everton before losing 2-0 at Leicester City last weekend.

Manager Nuno won’t be too concerned with just one point from a possible six as his side get used to life in the top flight, with some new signings needing to be bedded in.

One move in the summer did surprise many, but it wasn’t an incoming, rather an outgoing. Left back Barry Douglas enjoyed a superb season last term with five goals and 14 assists, and was expected to play a key role under Nuno again this season.

However, Douglas was sold to Leeds United in a shock move, with Atletico Madrid’s Jonny arriving as a replacement, though a move for Manchester City’s Oleksandr Zinchenko failed as Wolves sought a natural left-footer there.

That’s not to say Wolves don’t have other options already at the club; teenager Ryan Giles impressed in pre-season, and he will be looking to push for playing time this term.

Giles, 18, has come up through the ranks at Molineux, and has now been praised by Wolves sporting director Kevin Thelwell in an interview with The Express and Star.

Thelwell noted that Giles was ‘unbelievable’ in pre-season and has ‘high potential’, even revealing that a rival mystery sporting director asked why he isn’t in the first team having been so impressive.

“Giles had an outstanding pre-season and looks like he’s comfortable in the first team setup and has high potential too,” said Thelwell. “I don’t think anyone expected the impact Ryan would make. I was chatting to a sporting director who asked why he isn’t in our first-team squad because he was unbelievable in pre-season.”

“That shows the strength in depth we have. We’re very lucky we have a head coach who understands that young players can play a part at that level,” he added.
