Sunderland are currently at the bottom of the Premier League table.
Kevin Phillips has told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, which was broadcast on TalkSPORT on 14th December, that he is really concerned that Sunderland will not be able to spend much money in January.
Sunderland chief executive Martin Bain confirmed yesterday that David Moyes would not be able to invest many funds in improving his squad in the January transfer window (The Sun).
And Phillips is now concerned that Sunderland may slip out of the Premier League, due to their lack of finances.
“That really concerns me,” Phillips said. “Having survived by the skin of their teeth over the last three or four seasons, you feel that this is the year they could go down.
“If they then lose three or four in the summer, that could be disastrous for them.”
It was expected that Moyes would have some money to spend in January, to try and strengthen his squad.
However, it seems that the Black Cats boss will have to look towards the loan and free transfer market.
Sunderland are currently in decent form, but they have been unable to escape the bottom three.
The Wearsiders are sat at the foot of the Premier League table, with their next fixture coming against Chelsea later this evening.
Phillips admits that there is little pressure on Sunderland to get a victory against Antonio Conte’s side tonight, but he feels that his former side will have to beat Watford on Saturday.
“It’s a free hit tonight, but if they want to survive they need to win their games against the likes of Watford,” Phillips added.
