Miami’s season has had its fair share of twists and turns.

Following a three-game skid, the Heat have now won four straight, with their latest coming against the top-seeded Detroit Pistons.

Norman Powell led the way with 36 points, and he was one of four Miami players to finish in double figures.

The Heat look like they belong in the playoff conversation, but without a genuine star to lead them, it’s hard to see how they become more than just a competitive side. They still look like one piece short of being able to do more than compete.

The Miami Heat’s decision to trade Jimmy Butler at last season’s deadline officially closed the book on his time with the team.

During his time in Miami, Butler helped shape them into a serious postseason threat, guiding them to two NBA Finals appearances. However, despite coming close, the Heat never managed to win it all during his stint.

Before Butler arrived, the last true superstar trio in Miami was LeBron James alongside Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh—a group that delivered multiple championships.

Now, the Heat are looking for their next franchise player. Kevin O’Connor thinks they won’t have to wait much longer and predicts that by 2026, Miami will once again be a prime landing spot for elite talent.

“The Heat become a top destination for a star once again,” O’Connor said.

“If you look at this roster, it feels like they just need a star. They have everything else.”

O’Connor went on to highlight what he likes about the current roster outside of Powell and Cody Williams:

“They have front court versatility in Bam and Ware,” he continued.

Bam Adebayo has been great defensively as always and is still one of the best interior defenders in basketball.

Which star player might the Miami Heat target next?

There’s already speculation about the Heat potentially pursuing Giannis Antetokounmpo, as links between the two have been picking up steam lately.

The Bucks have shown no interest in moving Antetokounmpo so far, but if their struggles continue, he could eventually decide it’s time for a change.

Pat Riley tends to be patient with big moves, and this could be the opportunity he’s been waiting for. The Heat have enough pieces to make a competitive offer, and Miami offers the kind of big-market appeal Giannis has reportedly wanted in recent years.

If it isn’t Giannis, some other stars the Heat could target are Anthony Davis, Ja Morant or Trae Young.
