Mike Ashley has broken Newcastle United’s club transfer record for the second time in seven months following the signing of Hoffenheim powerhouse Joelinton.
Kevin Nolan has claimed that Mike Ashley will be hoping to sell Newcastle United’s club-record signing Joelinton for £80 million in three years time.
The Magpies smashed their club transfer record on Tuesday when they signed Brazilian striker Joelinton from Hoffenhiam for £40 million, as reported by BBC Sport.
After years of waiting for a big-money signing, Mike Ashley has now broken the club’s transfer record on two occasions within the space of seven months. At first on Miguel Almiron and now on Joelinton.
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live (23/07/2019 at 7:20 pm), Nolan stated that ‘ Newcastle fans won’t want to hear this’, but Joelinton has been purchased in the hope that he can go for double the price in a few years time.
“When you pay £40 million for someone and they ask for the number nine shirt, you cannot say no to them,” Nolan told BBC Radio 5 Live. “I think that’s the biggest thing. They are looking for a new number nine. A new hero.
“He has spent the money, Mike Ashley. Listen I am certainly hoping the lad gets off the ground running and he goes off smashing it. As we have all been saying, only time will tell. I think the biggest thing for him is he adapts to life up in Newcastle because it is going to be rather different from whatever he’s been used to.
“They [Newcastle] are looking at someone who is in their mid-twenties and is a saleable asset. I know the Newcastle fans won’t want to hear that, but they are hoping if he comes in and has three great seasons then they sell him for double the price.”
It has been a pretty drama-filled summer for those in the North East. The Toon Army faithful have seen the departures of Rafa Benitez and Ayoze Perez.
But equally they have seen Newcastle smash their transfer record for a highly-rated South American hitman, whilst in between Steve Bruce has walked through the St James’ Park doors.
Joelinton was a much-needed player for Newcastle because after the departure of Soloman Rondon, they desperately needed someone who can put the ball into the back of the net ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
