Former West Ham United captain Kevin Nolan has praised Andy Carroll during an interview with Sky Sports, saying he expects him to make a return to the England set-up.

The striker was in fine form at the end of last season as he scored six goals in the Hammers’ last ten games of the season. It led to calls for him to be included in the England squad for Euro 2016.

That did not happen, though, as manager Roy Hodgson elected to take Manchester United youngster Marcus Rashford instead.

His former manager Sam Allardyce is now in charge of the national side and Nolan is expecting an England return for Carroll as a result.

“He’s so easy to play with and he works his socks off. He doesn’t get the credit he deserves for how good he is with the ball at his feet,” he told Sky Sports.

“I’d be very surprised if he’s not in the England set up as soon as he gets himself fit as that’s what we were lacking in the Euros.”

Nolan has also claimed that he feels the striker has been extremely unlucky when it comes to injuries.

Carroll has managed just 188 appearances since 2011, an average of 19 per season, with injuries having been a major problem for him.

He looked set for a big campaign this year after getting a full pre-season under his belt, but a knee injury picked up in the Europa League has seen him miss the start of the year.

Many feel his injury record is down to the player being made of glass, but his former teammate insists that is not the case.

“It’s just unfortunate that this injury has cropped up,” he added.

“He trains a lot harder than he used to and he’s fully focused on what he needs to do. I think a lot of it is unlucky, he’s not made of glass.”
