Fulham midfielder Kevin McDonald has told Football.London that he wanted to stay in the January transfer window amid links to Rangers.
McDonald, 30, was a mainstay of the Fulham side which won promotion to the Premier League last season, racking up 43 appearances in all competitions under Slavisa Jokanovic.
The Scot started the season in the Fulham midfield, but really fell out of favour under Claudio Ranieri, playing just twice under the Italian.
When the January transfer window arrived, the experienced midfielder was strongly linked with a move away from Craven Cottage, especially to Rangers.
Football.London reported that Rangers had held preliminary discussions about signing McDonald, but no move materialised for the ex-Dundee ace to return to Scotland.
McDonald returned to the Fulham starting line-up last week and was kept in the team by interim boss Scott Parker following Ranieri’s exit.
It now seems that McDonald has a part to play at Craven Cottage once again, and he has discussed his feelings in January.
McDonald admitted that he had options in January, with Rangers seemingly one of them, but he chose to stick it out at Fulham and fight for his place, meaning the Gers may not have much chance of a deal if they try again this summer.
“It has been a long, tough season. It has been hard but I never gave up,” said McDonald. “I easily could have. I had plenty of options to leave in January but I stuck by it. I have got faith in myself, I always have done. It is one of those things. If a new manager does not want you to play, that is life. I am just happy to be back on the pitch and playing,” he added.
