Kevin McCabe has promised to provide Chris Wilder with a healthy budget upon Sheffield United’s return to the Premier League.

United are back in the top flight after 12 years away, despite having only spent modest amounts in recent campaigns.

McCabe, though, is aware that increased investment will be required going forward, but speaking to BBC Radio Sheffield on Tuesday, the Blades’ co-owner vowed not to risk the club’s long-term future.

“Let’s just say it’ll be a healthy one,” McCabe replied when asked about Wilder’s budget for next season. “Well look, we’re not in the Premier League for fun. And when you play in any market you can’t buck it. So it’s considering carefully. We’re not going to be rash, we’re not going to be stupid. We accept that the world of football sees clubs go down. In recent times, ourselves. Sunderland very recently. Norwich in years gone by. Leeds United, (Sheffield) Wednesday etc.

“We’ve got to plan when we get to the Premier League, to have a nucleus of a squad that will maintain its position, but that if it did come on hard times it doesn’t go down with a massive, massive tumble.”

Despite McCabe’s comments, it’s possible he will have passed on control of Sheffield United come the start of next season.

The Sheffield-born businessman went on to admit that talks are underway to sell the Blades once his ongoing court battle with co-owner Prince Abdullah bin Musa’ad is concluded.

“We have discussions with other parties, yes,” he added. “Those discussions will not be concluded until the outcome of the court case, which has actually started now, (is) over.

“Let me put it this way: it will happen more quickly than would have been the case had we been a Championship club. So there must be excitement all around. People want to be investing in the Premier League.”

Meanwhile, in an interview with the Daily Mirror earlier on Tuesday, Wilder revealed he will continue to focus on British recruits in the summer transfer window.
