Kevin Love explains how LeBron James’ basketball intelligence is unlike anything he’s ever seen.
Kevin Love played alongside LeBron James during the Cleveland Cavaliers’ most successful era, and even years later, he remains in awe of just how intelligent LeBron was on the court.
Recently, Love called LeBron the smartest player he’s ever played with — pointing to his preparation and memory as what set him apart from everyone else.

LeBron’s photographic memory separates him from everyone else
When asked to name the most intelligent player he’s shared a court with by Cam Johnson, Kevin Love didn’t hesitate before naming his former Cavaliers teammate, LeBron James.
He highlighted LeBron’s understanding of the game and his uncanny ability to recall every detail on the court.
“Easy. LeBron. He’s playing so much golf now… In shootaround or even out there on the floor, he could do every team’s scout. He knew every team’s play, he knew every guy’s tendency. He watched endless amounts of basketball… It’s a true gift.”
Love added that LeBron’s photographic memory allows him to recall entire sequences from games — from player positioning to time and score.
“You’ve seen some of those press conferences where he’s going back and going through several plays in sequence.
“He’s picking out details and players, where he was on the floor, where they were on the floor, what the time and score was of the game. That’s not normal.”
For Love, seeing LeBron process the game that way, both in practice and under pressure, was proof that he was witnessing a once-in-a-generation mind at work.
Love says LeBron’s mental approach changed how teammates saw the game
Kevin Love reflected on how LeBron’s preparation set the tone for everyone around him. From film sessions to live play calls, his attention to detail pushed his teammates to approach the game with the same level of discipline.
“It’s not lost on me that that is very special,” Love said. “When you see it first-hand, up close for so long, you realize why he’s been able to sustain greatness for two decades.”
LeBron’s basketball IQ has long been a trademark of his career — often cited by opponents and coaches alike.
But hearing it described by someone who spent four seasons beside him during the Cavaliers’ title run reinforces just how rare his ability to process the game truly is.
