Newcastle United continue to separate themselves from the trailing pack in the Premier League.

Eddie Howe’s outfit held West Ham United to a 1-1 draw in East London this afternoon and as a result, Newcastle are now five points clear of the relegation zone.

For a team that looked certain to be relegated a couple of months ago – well, staring down the barrel at least – the Magpies’ purple patch is quite remarkable.

Under Howe, the Tynesiders are now unbeaten in six Premier League outings and this stalemate ended their three-match winning run, including victories over Leeds United, Everton and Aston Villa.

There’s a genuine sense of togetherness within this Newcastle squad.

And here’s how club legend Warren Barton reacted to the result on Twitter this afternoon.

Barton was part of Kevin Keegan’s ‘Entertainers’ at St James’s Park and although this crop isn’t exactly playing scintillating football, they are grinding out results.

Under the threat of relegation, results are much more important than performances.

Newcastle aren’t playing poorly by any means – quite the opposite, evident by their results – but they aren’t playing the brand of football that the former Bournemouth manager will want to employ long term.

For now, though, it’s massively effective and it’s growing increasingly harder to see the St James’s Park outfit get relegated.
