The 29-year-old is in sensational form at the moment – but if he wants a starting place he might be disappointed at Tottenham Hotspur.

Atletico Madrid's Kevin Gameiro scores their third goal from the penalty spot

You could see why Kevin Gameiro would want to stay on the pitch for as long as possible in his current form, as reported by Marca.

Following on from the weekend’s four minute hat-trick against Sporting Gijon, the fastest in La Liga for 22 years, the ice-cool Frenchman dispatched a penalty as Atletico Madrid cruised to a 4-2 win away at Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League round of 16.

However, with 19 minutes still left on the clock at the Bay Arena, Diego Simeone hooked his rebooted goal machine. And, unsurprisingly, that didn’t go down too well with Gameiro.

“I was angry because you want to play the whole match when you’re playing well,” Gameiro told Marca after the game.

“Today I was a little bit angry. This is football, where the coach decides and that’s that.”

Though Simeone played down Gameiro’s reaction in typical Simeone style, praising the hunger and unquenchable rage in his player’s hearts, this is unlikely to reduce speculation linking him with a summer exit from the Vicente Calderon.

The Mirror reported that Atleti were open to offers for their £35 million striker after what, until very recently, had been a stop-start debut campaign in the Spanish capital.

And the publication added that Tottenham had been sounded out as a potential destination. And why not? Vincent Janssen’s struggles have been well-publicised while Gameiro, a jet-heeled striker who has made racing in behind defences his trademark, appears a far better fit for Mauricio Pochettino’s gameplan.

However, if he’s unhappy about spending time on the bench, maybe it’s not a good idea to become Harry Kane’s understudy.

Gameiro could be one of the most dangerous impact subs in the world game – though that’s not a move that is likely to appeal.
