Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook have shared one of the most talked-about relationships in modern NBA history.

Once teammates and close friends in Oklahoma City, their partnership turned into a fierce rivalry after Durant’s controversial move to the Golden State Warriors in 2016.

But this week, Durant set aside the past to show his admiration for his former co-star after Westbrook became the highest-scoring point guard in NBA history.

The achievement, where Westbrook surpassed Oscar Robertson on the all-time list, was met with an outpouring of respect from across the basketball world.

Durant, who rarely comments on his former teammate publicly, surprised fans with a heartfelt message that signalled a renewed sense of appreciation for him.

Durant congratulated his former teammate in a short but powerful message that acknowledged Westbrook’s career longevity and impact on the game.

“Russ, congrats on being the highest-scoring point guard,” Durant said. “Insane. It’s insane what you were able to accomplish, being a Hall of Fame, legendary, iconic player.”

For many fans, Durant’s words represented a significant moment in a relationship that has long been defined by tension.

The two spent eight seasons together in Oklahoma City, where they became one of the most dynamic duos in league history and led the Thunder to the 2012 NBA Finals.

When Durant left for Golden State, the move sparked years of public friction between the pair, but their recent exchange showed mutual respect.

James Harden and Chris Paul also send messages to Westbrook

Westbrook’s achievement also drew tributes from James Harden and Chris Paul, both long-time friends and fellow legends of the modern game.

“Yo Russ, congrats, my brother. Passing the big O, we knew it was a matter of time,” said Paul.

“My tiny West. Since we were kids, we dreamed of things like this, so keep going. You’re not done,” added Harden.

The milestone cemented Westbrook’s place among the game’s all-time greats, as the three former MVP-calibre players (Durant, Harden, and Paul) came together to celebrate his career.
