Kevin De Bruyne has revealed that he idolised Liverpool legend Michael Owen during his childhood.
The Manchester City playmaker made the revelation while picking up UEFA’s Midfielder of the Year award at the Champions League draw on Thursday.
The Liverpool Echo quote him as saying: ‘When I was really young, it was Michael Owen (he looked up to). I was playing as a striker, so we were fairly similar at the time. But then I got slightly older, and I grew a little bit, so I became more of a midfielder.’
This isn’t the first time the ex-Chelsea man has admitted his childhood interest in Liverpool.
De Bruyne has previously told Match of the Day Magazine in 2019 (via Goal) that he was a Liverpool fan, while some family of his who lived in England also supported the Reds.

Goal quote him as saying: ‘I was a Liverpool fan. My family that live in England were all Liverpool supporters so I was, too.’
It is quite interesting to see the Belgium international reinforce his childhood passion for the Premier League champions, especially given the current rivalry between Manchester City and his boyhood club.
Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp’s sides have been vying for the Premier League title in recent years, with both clubs undoubtedly leading the way in England right now.

In that respect, you would think De Bruyne wouldn’t be so vocal about his love for all things Liverpool, but he simply can’t hide his adoration for the Merseysiders.
Just imagine him in that midfield alongside Thiago Alcantara, both threading through balls to Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane – it’s truly a mouthwatering prospect.
However, despite his love for Liverpool, a move to Anfield is almost unfathomable in our view, given how much it would potentially cost the Reds.
