Kevin Davies has backed his former Preston North End teammate Joe Garner to thrive in the heat of the Old Firm battle should he complete his switch to Rangers, the Evening Times reports.
The Evening Times claims that the 28-year-old is on the verge of becoming Mark Warburton’s tenth signing of the summer at Ibrox, so could well be settled in to his new surroundings by the time the Light Blues travel to Celtic Park in early September for the first league meeting between the pair for several years.
And Davies has explained why he reckons his old strike-partner will be a huge asset to Warburton’s squad in such an important game.
He told the Evening Times: “I think he will relish that game and he has certainly got a feistiness about him and the character to go into that game. They will probably need to calm him down at some point!

“He is a Preston boy and he loved playing for the club. When the crowd got behind him, that pushed him on even more so playing in that kind of atmosphere will really drive him on.
“He will put himself about with tackles, leave bits on defenders here and there. He has got everything in his locker.”
Davies’ assessment suggests that Garner is very much a confidence player. And there will arguably be nothing that will boost his confidence more than a goal in his first Old Firm game, as it will surely convince him, as well as any fans who doubted him, that he deserves to be playing for one of the biggest clubs in Britain.
And with the fact that Rangers will go into almost every game as favourites meaning that there is arguably plenty of pressure on the Gers every time they take to the pitch, supporters will be hoping that Garner is one for the big occasion as that should mean that he has no problem finding his best form at Ibrox.
