In an interview with Talksport on Tuesday, former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell urged Jack Wilshere to follow his lead on leaving the Gunners.

Wilshere, who has spent the past two seasons plagued by injuries, will be allowed to depart the Emirates Stadium on loan, according to reports.

West Ham United and Crystal Palace are among the early Premier League favourites for Wilshere’s signature (Sky Bet), with foreign sides Juventus and Valencia also attracting bets.

And Campbell, who had a successful spell at Turkish side Trabzonspor after leaving Arsenal via Nottingham Forest, thinks a move abroad would be perfect for the England midfielder.

“It might work out if he went abroad,” Campbell told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show, “because the football isn’t as physical, it’s more technical and Jack Wilshere’s a technical player.

He added: “I think Spain would suit him, probably France would suit him.

“Having played abroad myself, it does make a difference. It’s a different environment, obviously you’re out of your comfort zone and it’s a fantastic learning experience.

“It made me a better player going abroad and I’m sure if the lads (Wilshere and Joe Hart) do go abroad they’ll come back better for sure – and be better for England.”

Wilshere has played 37 minutes of Premier League football this season, with Granit Xhaka, Arsenal’s £34 million summer recruit, impressing in his place.

Since Wilshere last completed 90 minutes for the Gunners, Francis Coquelin and Mohamed Elneny – a January capture from FC Basel – have also emerged as rivals in Arsene Wenger’s engine room.

The 24-year-old currently has 22 months to run on his Emirates Stadium contract.
