Martin Keown has told BBC Sport that Ragnar Klavan will have to improve quickly if he is to remain in the Liverpool first team.
The defender is one of a raft of new players to arrive at Anfield this summer as Jurgen Klopp has overhauled his squad.
He has been brought in as direct replacement for duo Martin Skrtel and Kolo Toure, who have both been allowed to move on.
The Estonian international has had a shaky start to life on Merseyside though, with the Reds conceding five goals in his first two Premier League games.

Last week saw him put in a disappointing display in the 2-0 loss to Burnley and Keown has told him he will have to improve if he wants to remain in the team.
“Klopp let two of his centre halves, Skrtel and Toure, leave so I was expecting Ragnar Klavan to be a world beater,” he told BBC Sport.
“So far, the 30-year-old does not seem to be at the same level as Skrtel or Toure, let alone an improvement. If he is going to stay in Liverpool’s defence he is going to have to get better quickly.”

The defence is certainly an issue for Liverpool this season; with it looking like it could be the factor to hold them back yet again.
Klavan’s performances will have been concerning, especially after Jurgen Klopp had backed him so strongly following his move this summer.
And it will be interesting to see if the German decides that more signings are needed before the end of the transfer window to solve the problem.
