Martin Keown has suggested to the Daily Mail that Steven Bergwijn could be annoyed with Tottenham Hotspur boss Jose Mourinho.
Bergwijn has made an impressive start at Tottenham after arriving in January, with the £27 million (BBC Sport) Dutch winger looking like a real threat.
However, Mourinho actually came out and publicly admitted that Bergwijn wasn’t his top target in the last transfer window.
And Keown was shocked by the comments, as he feels that could risk aggravating the Tottenham man.
“I was surprised when Mourinho said last month that January signing Steven Bergwijn was ‘not my first option’ but he’s happy the club followed through with buying him,” Keown said.
“I admire the honesty but I wouldn’t want to be hearing that if I was that player! It was Mourinho letting us all know these are not his recruits.”
Mourinho actually hasn’t used Bergwijn as frequently as some Tottenham fans have wanted in recent weeks.
Lucas Moura has been favoured to start down Tottenham’s right-flank, with Mourinho clearly a massive fan of the Brazilian.
Bergwijn has stil been afforded game time though, and his tally of three goals and one assist in his first 14 Premier League games is highly credible.
