Former Arsenal star Martin Keown has told BBC Sport (16:40) that the match against Manchester City could be the making of Everton goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg.

Stekelenburg was arguably Everton’s best player against City at the weekend, as the Toffees played out a 1-1 draw with Pep Guardiola’s side at the Etihad Stadium.

The 34-year-old former Ajax and Fulham goalkeeper made as many a two penalty saves during the match on Saturday afternoon.

The Netherlands international first denied Kevin De Bruyne and then kept out Sergio Aguero’s attempt.

Stekelenburg also made a number of important saves over the course of the 90 minutes, leading former Arsenal star Keown to sing his praises.

“This might just be the making of him, because a lot of people were talking about Joe Hart being the future goalkeeper at Everton but he’s shown why Ronald Koeman has faith in him,” Keown told BBC Sport (16:40) about Stekelenburg.

Stekelenburg may be 34 years of age, but he is genuinely a good goalkeeper.

The Dutchman has established himself as the first choice between the posts for Everton, and his performance against City suggests that he is not going to be displaced from his position anytime soon.

Everton are sixth in the Premier League table at the moment with 15 points from eight matches, just four points behind leaders City.
