Tottenham Hotspur are struggling in Europe this season.
Former Arsenal defender Martin Keown has been speaking to the Daily Mail about Tottenham Hotspur’s Wembley woes in the Champions League.
Mauricio Pochettino’s side lost 1-0 to Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday evening courtesy of a strike from Kevin Kampl.
It was a bitter blow for a Spurs side that have struggled to settle in their temporary surroundings for European matches, and Keown feels the move is affecting them, just as it did for the Gunners when they played there in the Champions League.
“Tottenham have had two bad results there now and it is in the players’ minds,” Keown wrote. “I feel they would have fared better if the games had been played at White Hart Lane.
“I thought Tottenham looked a little jaded. Toby Alderweireld is a big miss at the back and we saw a couple of rare moments of hesitation from Kyle Walker.”
The Tottenham right-back has been in superb form for much of the campaign to date, so he can be forgiven for having a below-par performance against the Bundesliga club.
Spurs were also always going to miss a player of Alderweireld’s quality and the Belgian international cannot return soon enough as they attempt to reach the knockout stages of the Champions League and remain firmly in the title race.
