Martin Keown told Final Score on BBC One that ‘nobody’ thought Harry Kane would be ‘good enough’ for Tottenham.

Of course, now Kane is regarded as one of the best strikers if not the best forward in the world and a Tottenham legend.

But it wasn’t plain sailing for the potential Premier League and England record-breaker, who was the top scorer and assist-maker for the 2020/21 Premier League season.

Ex-Gunners defender, Keown, pointed out Kane’s previous loan spells before he was handed his Tottenham debut and the notion around him, at the time.

“I think this is worth saying that this is a player that went out on loan to four different clubs,” said Keown. “He went to Orient, Millwall, Norwich and Leicester.

“Nobody really quite thought he was going to be good enough. But he came into this Spurs team with Pochettino. I think Sherwood gave him his debut.

“He has been quite brilliant with the way he keeps finding a way to improve and get better.”

Tim Sherwood, who worked with the Spurs youngsters before briefly being the manager of the senior team, deserves credit for giving him the first-team shot.

And whilst Mauricio Pochettino didn’t hand him a regular starting birth from the get-go, that path Sherwood laid out for him eventually lead him to become the player he is now.

Pochettino no doubt took his game to the next level again and again, but now he is at a crossroads in North London and Daniel Levy has to show serious ambition in the market to keep the Englishman on his books.
